Chewing is awesome!

30 day juice fast complete, so I'm adding solid food back in to my diet. 

Today was a cautious day as I didn't want to freak my system out. Also, my plan is to stay as raw as possible. So today was my habitual pre-juice fast smoothie for breakfast (a Vitamix is one of the things I use most in the kitchen). It was especially tasty today: spinach, beet, banana, ghost and scorpion peppers from my garden (I grow them outside in the warm months, move the plant inside for the winter and dry the last harvest for cold weather use), Sun Warrior Raw Protein powder,  and blueberries. Delicious. Lunch I added the real food back in, but stayed light. It was a salad with spinach, kale, almonds, walnuts, beets, jalapeño pepper, red onion and hommos. A great way to get solid stuff back in my system and a delight to eat. I was surprised with a dropped-off sample of the raw lasagne from One Lucky Duck for dinner at the gym -- it was fantastic! A Juice Press First Degree Burn cold-pressed juice to close out the food day, and I was feeling pretty damn good.

Wednesday is a long day of teaching classes for me. It's gotten very cold and snowed again this morning in NYC, but that didn't keep the students away from Five Points:)



Ended the day with some Original Strength rolling and crawling (20 minutes), then a Harney and Sons peppermint tea just to wind down.

Juice Press: Day 30

This was it. The last day of my 30 day juice fast. This is the final report I gave to the great folks at Juice Press:

"I decided to try the Juice Press 30 day juice cleanse on the recommendation of Juice Press founder and CEO, Marcus Antebi. The suggestion came out of the blue and was something of a surprise to me, as I’m really pretty healthy: I’m a retired professional fighter who still trains regularly, my job as a gym owner and muay thai trainer keeps me active, I’m pretty lean and I’ve been following a healthy, plant-based diet for decades. But Marcus claimed that I would experience very real positive benefits from the experience. I’ve known Marcus a long time — he’s been training with me for many years — and I trust his judgement. And, honestly, I also wanted to see if I could do the 30 day fast.

The first thing I noticed on the cleanse was that I never felt as if I was starving or deprived. I’m used to cutting weight — I fought for years and it’s part of the game. But this was different: you’re drinking a juice every couple of hours and they really do make you feel satisfied. The second pleasant surprise was that I never felt tired or drawn; in fact, I had more energy, and was in a better mood. My work and training days are long (usually 12-14 hours) and I’d gotten used to drinking 6-8 cups of coffee per day, and still being tired from waking up until falling asleep at night. After only a few days on the juice fast I found that not only didn’t I need the coffee, I didn’t even want it, and I had energy from the time I woke up until I went to sleep at night. Perhaps the biggest surprise on the cleanse was that my training didn’t suffer. I fully expected to have to cut back on training intensity. It simply didn’t happen. In fact, throughout the 30 day period I made continuous gains in both strength and endurance. There were some other odd but pleasant surprises along the way, as well: circulation in my fingers and toes, which is always a big problem for me in the cold months, improved; the night sweats I’d been having for months subsided; and I received multiple comments on how I basically seemed to be glowing with good health. I didn’t set out to lose weight — getting too thin and weak was actually a little bit of a concern for me. I’m 5’11" and started the cleanse at a lean 154 lbs. I finished at 147 lbs, which is a little thinner than I would like to be, but I was never hungry or weak.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed all of the juices on the cleanse. For the first few weeks I followed the three options laid out for the juice fast (basic, alternate and winter solstice), rotating them daily. it kept me from getting bored and provided a lot of variety. In the final weeks I started experimenting a bit, mixing the selections and picking some alternates, as well. I have always liked spicy foods, so really enjoyed the selections with some bite. I thought Spicy Citrus and Ginger Fireball were it until I discovered the Volcano. It’s invigorating! And for those times when I wanted something a little sweeter, Juice Press has that covered, too: Fountain of Youth is like a berry dessert, but in my book, the Lait de Coconut can’t be beat. I also noticed that my palate got more sensitive as the fast progressed. The green juices -- which were decent enough at the beginning -- really became something to look forward to as I started to pick up on the the individual elements in the mix. I’d have to say that by the end of the cleanse, my absolute favorite was Doctor Green Juice. It’s just really, really refreshing.

Finishing the cleanse was something of a mixed bag for me. On the one hand, I really enjoyed how I felt the entire time. On the other, I found that I missed the act of eating. My plan is to get the best of both of those worlds. My diet has already been vegan for decades; I’m going to try to keep it as raw as possible going forward. And I think I’ll throw a 3 day juice fast in once a month, just to keep the momentum going."

Juice Fast: Day 29

With one day remianing in the fast I continue to feel strong, upbeat and very energetic. A little on the light side, though, getting down close to 145 lbs.

Training:

Strength Training: I increased weight in all my lifts today

Warm Up: Strong First Mobility Drills
Swings: 5 x 10 left/ 5 x 10 right (100 total one arm swings) with 32 kg kettlebell
Deadlift: 2 x 5 with 245 lb barbell
Double Kettlebell Bench Press: 2 x 5 with 28 kg kettle bells
Ab Work: 1 x10, hanging leg raise; 1 x 10, windshield wipers; 1 x 5, front levers with 5 sec hold

Skill Training:
skip rope, 10 minutes
bag work, 12 rounds

Juice Selection: 14 Hours, The Remedy, Miracle Mylk, Pink Punk, Volcano, Fountain of Youth

Lots of students and classes on Mondays. I start early and go late into the evening. But I feel great, and classes were awesome!

Juice Fast: Day 28

Sunday mornings are just about my favorite time of the week. I get up early and head to the park with Forest. We get back in the woods, running the trails, walking the railroad tracks -- both active and abandoned tracks run through the woods-- and just enjoying the solitude. It's a great way to start the day. Right now it remains rough, slow going from all the snow and ice but still pretty amazing.



My son got back from Florida vacation yesterday, after a weather delay of  one day and a very long, diverted flight home (as an aside, can I just say that American Airlines is just about the worst airline, ever). I missed the little bugger; he's growing fast. One week and he looks like a different kid.



Winding down to the end of the 30 days on the juice fast. I'm excited to start transitioning my plant-based diet of many years to a primarily raw diet. Exploring and researching lots of easy-fix meals, as well as kid-friendly options so that I can get my son involved, too. His eating habits are pretty good but I'd like to eliminate as much processed "food" as possible.

Juice Fast: Perfect Pear, Vital Force, Mother Earth, Spicy Citrus, Perfect Pear (I really had a taste for it today!)

Training: Easy day today, some simple bodyweight just to move a little.

Pull Ups: Ladder 5,4,3,2,1

Then I had my son do some of the same, at lower volume.

Other than that, a very laid back day. Changed out a spotlight bulb in the backyard that the snow kept me from changing earlier, read, napped and helped my son with his science project. My job was mostly clean-up, he got to do all the fun stuff :)

Juice Fast: Day 27

Love Saturdays. The day starts early with a long walk with Forest, then off to Five Points early to open and get my work in before the day starts. It's a bodyweight training day which I thoroughly enjoy, and approach as therapy for all the stress my normal training puts on the body.


Training:

Warm Up: easy run
One Arm One Leg Push Up: assisted with plyo band, ladders 5,4,3,2,1 left and right.
Pistols: ladders 5,4,3,2,1 left and right
Assisted One Arm Pull Ups: gripping the working forearm with the other hand, ladders 5,4,3,2,1 left and right.
Ab Work: decline sit ups with alternating elbow strike at the top, 1 x 50

We had special guests at Five Points today for the sparring class. Four Russian fighters from the Russian Muay Thai League came to New York for sightseeing and some training at Five Points. It was an excellent opportunity for the fighters from Russia and Five Points to get some work in with international A- Class fighters in a friendly training environment. Everyone had a great time and worked very, very hard. I'm really pleased we are able to do unique events like this.

Juice Fast: Day 26

A wet, foggy morning today but still warming up so the snow and ice from the past few weeks continues to melt. Makes me think that spring is just around the corner.

Partner Bag Intervals: :30 work/:30 shadow, 20 minutes





I did it all in one shot today, as I've no time for splits. At the end I still felt extremely fresh and strong.

Home in the afternoon, took Forest for a walk before the rain. Some odds and ends around the house and lots of reading time! Looks like another night of just Forest and me, as the weather has caused the return flight from Florida of the rest of the family to be delayed until tomorrow.

Juice Fast: Day 25

As I get close to the end of the fast, I'm going to make an effort to try a lot of the juices that aren't included in the standard cleanse menus. Living on the edge:)


Training: only 5 days left in the fast, and I continue to feel strong. I've made consistent improvements in both strength and endurance over the course of the cleanse. If I had to pick one thing that has surprised me about the experience, I'd have to say that is it.

Strength Training:

Warm Up: easy run with Forest. Next week when NYC schools winter recess is over, and everyone is back at home, I'm really going to miss having Forest at Five Points with me. 
Swings: 5 x 20 left/20 right with 28 kg kettlebell.

Morning full of clients, then an early day. Thursdays are usually like that, which is awesome, as I've already done 40+ hours at the gym by then. Having the afternoon on Thursday lets me get work done around the house, some park time with Forest, or just some down time for me.

Juice Fast: Day 24

Warmer weather is coming, and I couldn't be more pleased. Already above freezing when Forest and I headed in to Five Points this morning. Supposed to be in high 30s today with some rain later -- that should get rid of a lot of this snow and ice that's accumulated over the last weeks.

Kettlebell Complex: Swing, snatch, windmill x 100 with 22 kg bell
Ab Work: hanging inverted pikes, 1 x 10; hanging inverted sit ups, 1 x 10. These are great work, a nice way to hit the abs, and it feels great to just hang upside down when I'm done. Plus I'll sometimes get a random kiss out of it.







Skill Training:

Bag work, 30 minutes freestyle under the watchful eye of my coach, Forest.
shadow boxing, 10 minutes
Primal Move Flow to cool down


Then closed it all out with a great bunch of hard-working students in class.  An awesome day!

Juice Fast: Day 23

Another snowy day in New York City. Forest and I are home alone for the week, so he's coming in to Five Points with me every day. We took a walk around Chinatown and Soho this morning in the snow.

While I may be on the on the juice -- and my diet is plant-based even when I'm eating normally -- my dog Forest is a serious carnivore. And since he's been so good on the long days at the gym, he gets some dog-tasty rewards. Forest can do some serious damage to a marrow bone. He 's not happy until all the tendons are off, the bone is cracked open and the marrow is gone. He's got the cleanest teeth you've ever see on a dog.

Music: Metal is pretty much the perfect complement to bag work as far as I'm concerned. Today was old school: Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, etc.

Tuesday is a busy day filled with private students and one of my kettlebell classes, but it runs pretty much straight through so I'm done in the early evening. So it's an early night for Forest and me, with ample time to just take it easy at home with a book or a movie. I love those nights.

Juice Fast: Day 22

Ah, yes. 8 days to go. I find that I'm looking ahead to the end of my fast with mixed feelings. On the one hand, it will be very cool to chew food again! On the other, I have felt exceptionally good throughout. I'm already researching and planning to ensure that continues even when the fast is over.

Stepped away from the pre-set Juice Press cleanses today and mixed up the selections:
Good Weed, South of the Border, Complete Meal, Fountain of Youth, Doctor Green Juice, Gravity

Another day of increases on my strength training today. And these are Easy Strength-style strength sessions, so these increases keep me in the 70-80% effort range; they are not anywhere near 1RM.

Deadlift: 2 x 5 with 235 lb barbell

Passa Chattra has been training with me for almost 8 years. She is, quite frankly, a trainer's dream. She works extremely hard, listens, does her homework, and never complains. She's also smart and talented, a product designer by trade (creativity must run in the family; her husband, Ed Kilduff, is a principal and co-founder of Pollen Design, an award-winning product design company that specializes in creating innovative and aspirational product designs). And she's a great mom (her daughter trains here, too, in our FitTykes program) and an already awesome person.

Passa both trains muay thai and strength trains with me. She went from no martial arts experience to fighting; she still spars regularly. After we'd been training for several years, she and Ed decided to have a child. Passa continued to train throughout her pregnancy. In fact, our last session was 4 days before the birth of their daughter, Ryo. And she bounced right back to it: 2 months after giving birth we (Passa, her friends Emily, Marian and I) ran the Brooklyn Half-Marathon. Juice Fast: Day 21

Wow. Three weeks into the fast -- time is flying. Hard to believe I've only got 9 days until the 30 day goal. Today's selection was the Juice Press Alternate Cleanse.

Sunday is my day off from Five Points, so most weeks it starts with a trail run in the park with my dog, Forest. Although with all the snow, the run is more of a shuffle, but it's still an amazing way to start the day. We're there before the sun comes up and stay until it's risen -- usually about an hour. It's a little cold in this weather but Forest doesn't seem to mind and it's such fun -- and such a great view and way to start the day -- that I don't either. We usually hit the back trails but there has been so much snow that they are pretty much impassable. But the bridal paths are clear enough for us to do our thing. Thanks, horses!  

After the run, and since it's the weekend, it was another bodyweight day. We're home alone for the week, so I was able to turn up the music as loudly as I wanted. Industrial was on the plate today; Ministry, NIN, Rob Zombie remixes, Combichrist, KMFDM, etc. 

Training:

Air lunges, 10 x 1 left and right
One Arm One Leg Push Ups, 10 x 1 left and right
L-sit Chin Ups, 2 x 8

Short, sweet and done. It's Sunday, so I get to be a little lazy. Spent the rest of the morning reading and puttering around the house cleaning and doing little projects. In the afternoon Forest and I headed in to Five Points. No work -- although Forest got a run in -- but I was the guest on the Walking Alone podcast, hosted by one of our Five Points fighters/coaches, Cornell Ward  and  his friend Diego Lopez, who trains/coaches at Williamsburg MMA.  They describe it as "two NYC fighters talk martial arts, diet, fitness, lifestyle and more, also we're very handsome." It was pretty entertaining; check out all the episodes out here.

Juice Fast: Day 20

It's winter recess for the NY Public Schools, so my son and his mom are off to Florida. That means  that Forest gets to come with me to Five Points every day. We both enjoy that, me because he's great to have around all day and him because he gets spoiled by all the attention from everyone at the gym.

Juice Fast: Winter Solstice. Only 10 days left on my 30 day juice fast. It's hard to believe it's gone so quickly. I've felt great pretty much the whole time, no hunger pangs, made strength gains, had plenty of energy for my training, teaching and life in general. I have lost a bit of weight (about 7 or 8 pounds) which wasn't my goal and I really didn't need; I'm a bit thin at the moment. But I feel healthy and strong and I can always eat more when the fast is over:) It's pretty cool.

Training:

Strength Training: It's the weekend, so it's all about bodyweight exercises. Getting in touch with how my body links together and giving the joints a break from loading. Plus, it's fun -- especially with Forest in the mix.

Warm Up: easy run for Forest and me on the treadmill. You can see a video clip here.
One Arm One Leg PushUp: assisted with the small plyoband so I can get reps in for practice. I did them as ladders: 5,4,3,2,1 on each side.
Pull Ups: 5,4,3,2,1, with pause at the bottom and pulling to the chest at the top.
Pistols: 5,4,3,2,1 left and right
Ab Work: Ab Wheel 2 x 10.

Skill Training:
Bag work: 30 second intervals -- :30 hard work on the bag, :30 easy shadowbox for recovery. 30 minutes, with a different technique focus each round.

Taught the sparring class, a mixed level muay thai class, a kettlebell class, a private student...and we're out! I really enjoy Saturdays. It's a full day but very compact, so I'm done early afternoon with plenty of down time to enjoy the rest of the day.

Juice Fast: Day 19

Slept really well last night, as in, I felt extremely well rested this morning. Which was good, as once I got to Five Points there was a ton of clean up to do. With all the snow, rain, and temperature up and downs, the roof is saturated and we had quite a bit of water find it's way through to our space. So that needed cleaning up and the entrance needed to be shoveled, as well. And then I could actually start to train!

Early day today; finished training students at noon. Then I shot up to the Juice Press on Mott Street for tomorrow's juices. Ran in to two Five Points alumni there, James May and Casey Neistat. Did some very brief catching up; James works in fashion/design and has been working like a dog (and doing his own Juice Fast this past January; nice!). Casey is a film director -- my favorite thing he's  done is here , but all his stuff is unique and entertaining-- who went off to South Africa and got married. I really enjoy the variety of people/vocations/passions we get at Five Points; I'm not sure you can get the same mix of people anywhere outside of New York.

Still got home with daylight to spare. That could only mean a trip to the park with Forest.

Juice Fast: Day 18

More snow, sleet and cold in NYC today -- so it's a perfect day for the Winter Solstice from Juice Press. Lots of ginger and turmeric to warm me up inside.

Woke up hungry this morning for the 1st time since I started the fast. Still strong on my lifts today, and plenty of energy for training, though. And for shoveling:)

Ab Work: inversion fun today. Using gravity boots and the pull up bar I get a change up to the way I work the abs and some great back release by hanging at the end. Pikes, 1 x 8 / Crunches, 1 x 8.

Trained a few students, then home to shovel. And shovel again.

Juice Fast: Day 17

Good sleep last night, and longer than usual: a solid 7 hours! I had to sub out my kettlebell class yesterday and leave Five Points early to get home and help my son get supplies for his science project. So I got father-son time AND an early night. It was like Xmas came early.

Kettlebell swing, snatch, windmill complex: 20 minutes, 100 reps with 22 kg/48.5 lb bell. I moved up one weight from last week. That's right. I'm on a juice fast and getting stronger.

Partner counter drills: 6 x 4 min rounds/30 sec rest
Techical (light) sparring: 5 x 4 min rounds/30 sec rest

Wednesday is a long day with classes all day and in to the night. But I had a very good time today, too. Firstst, my partner for drills was one of our longtime fighters and  2x World Champion Emily Bearden. It's always good training with Emily; she's quick, experienced and tricky -- and I can't rely on my size -- so it really makes me work on speed and tight defense. Then I did pad work with Greg Rowe. One of our A-class fighters who is already making a big mark, Greg won the WKA Amateur World Championships and holds multiple -- as in many -- titles. Training the active fighters is always great, as I have to work as hard as they do in order to keep them improving. Fun stuff.
